Who is a Plastic Surgeon?

The public generally recognizes plastic surgeons from the aesthetic operations seen in the colorful pages of newspapers or social media posts. Generally, breast, nose, lip and fat removal aesthetics attract the most attention.

However, aesthetic operations are a small but famous part of the “Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery” field of study. It is the tip of the iceberg. Plastic surgeons touch and treat almost the entire body. Since plastic surgeons are in close contact with other surgical and non-surgical branches of medicine, their manners, skills and general culture are extremely high. Since they work with many different textures, their manual skills are quite well developed.

Our wish is that it never happens, but for example, when your hand or another limb is injured, or your child is born with problems such as cleft lip and palate or hypospadias, you are burned, you get cancer, or your skin becomes ill enough to require surgery, the person you will go to is a Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery Specialist.

Microsurgery is one of the main branches of plastic surgery. Plastic Surgeons are the architects of the success of “Face Transplant”, which has made our country’s name known all over the world. Severed organs such as hands, feet, and ears could not be sewn back together without microsurgery. Although it may seem like magic, making a lower jaw from a leg bone or a penis from an arm is also a common subject of Plastic Surgery and Microsurgery. Thousands of such examples can be given. However, it should not be forgotten that plastic surgeons are not magicians, but scientists who try to be beneficial to their patients in accordance with scientific rules.

One of the worst injuries that can happen to a person is a burn. The person who deals intimately with an unpleasant condition such as a burn and undertakes its long-term treatment is also a plastic surgeon. The first doctors seen by babies with congenital problems such as cleft lip and palate, attached fingers, missing ears, foreskin, head and facial defects will most likely be a pediatrician and a plastic surgeon. Plastic surgeons also repair fractures of facial bones and disorders of the inside of the mouth and jaw bones. The branch of medicine called “Orthognathic Surgery” is the field of plastic surgery and requires intense anatomy knowledge and manual dexterity. Perhaps many of the plastic surgeons asked during their specialty training, “Are we interested in this area too? ” he asked himself.

Aesthetic Surgery is a small part of the field of plastic surgery. In a sense, it is like the strawberry on the cake. It is not possible to perform good plastic surgery without a solid plastic and reconstructive surgery foundation and experience.

In today’s market conditions, many people, whether physicians or non-physicians, unfairly introduce themselves as “Aesthetic” or “Plastic” surgeons just to make money and deceive the patients who apply to them. According to the laws of our country, documents such as “certificate, permit, charter, course participation certificate” obtained other than diplomas have NO VALIDITY. These are documents that are often used to deceive people. The number of Plastic Surgeons in our country does not exceed 1500, according to the data of the Turkish Plastic Surgery Association. However, wherever you look in our country, you will find a Plastic or Aesthetic surgeon. In a country of eighty million people, while there are so many title thieves and fake Plastic and Aesthetic surgeons, finding a real Plastic surgeon is as valuable as finding a real diamond.
